Miscalculation

I buzzed my paramour in and poured some wine. Two minutes later she entered in a stunning red dress and walked over to kiss me.

A foot from me she stopped, face contorting in disgust and exclaimed “What is that smell? It’s awful!”

I knew then my cologne was a bad choice.

“As you know.” Azrael, chief demon, began, “Used to keep here at 4000 degrees. But people got used to it. Now, just 80, randomly dropping to -10. The Boss thought of it after time in a New York apartment.”

“Left it open” I said and closed the door, “Stupid!”

“Don’t knock yourself” Came a familiar voice, “It was locked.”

Something was there.

Something big.

I couldn’t tell what.

The Wait

“I don’t think it was our end sir!” said the technician.

I looked out the window where the Line, our outpost’s wormhole to Earth, had been.

“Put me through to the crew” I said, looking further, trying to find the faint Sun of home, countless light years away, “Everyone needs to know.”
